Have You Told Your Story? The internet is a wondrous thing, bringing young and old together, offering a wealth of information to all ages, and allowing individuals a place to tell their story. No matter what topic a person is interested in, has dealt with, or has mastered, information beyond belief can be found by pressing a few keys, typing a few words, and hitting the enter button. Amazing isn't it? I have been able to 'connect' with people from across the globe, discussing everything from infertility to birth control methods, all because of a small machine that sits on my desk and connects me to the rest of world. So, what does this have to do with birth control? Everything my friends! Does your local paper cover the most recent news about advancements in contraceptive methods? Mine doesn't. Do you have several friends that live in your town that all use different methods of birth control and tell you about all the side effects they have? I don't. You can talk to a woman living in England, another living in Canada, and you can live in America, and you can discuss how the patch has irritated your skin, or how Depo has caused severe weight gain, or how Ortho Tri-Cyclen has cleared up your mild acne. Would you blush talking to a friend about the monster cramps you have? Maybe not, but maybe you would blush talking about how easy it is to insert the vaginal ring, Nuva Ring.
Being able to 'talk' to other individuals about side effects you have experienced, reading about the newest developments, or singing the praises of your birth control method only happen because of the internet. Think about it, how likely would you be to contact your local newspaper or television station to talk to them about your birth control method and how it has affected your life. How likely would it be that the paper or television station would actually publish your story? What you can do, no HTML knowledge needed, is create a free web site, start a support group, or join a message board community. Through these mediums, you can share your knowledge, ask your questions, and literally tell the world your story. What about gathering reliable information about your method of birth control? Where can you go to learn how others have reacted to the method you are using or thinking about using? Should you rely on a complete stranger for information that could change your life? As with most things online, take the 'opinions' of others with a grain of salt and remember that most opinions will be negative. The reason for this is just like any other consumer encounter. If you have a bad experience at your local department store, you are likely to tell 10 people about it. If you have a good or even great experience at your local department store, you might tell one or two people. That is just how it works. Keeping this in mind when looking for information about a birth control method (or anything for that matter) may help you in making the choice. I could sit here and tell you all about the opinions I have seen on a wide variety of message boards and web sites. The reason I don't do that is because it is only half the story. There are many 'good' stories out there, but they are much harder to find. So, whether you have had a good, bad or just so-so experience with your birth control method, why not tell the world your story? Why not take just five or ten minutes and find a message board. Post your questions, answer what you can, and provide your opinion. You never know when you could influence someone's life for the better because you took the time to tell your story.
