Depo-Provera II: Some Women Love It

There are many women that could not imagine what they would do if Depo-Provera was removed from the market. They don't worry about unintended pregnancy, forgetting a pill, or worrying if the condom broke. It is easy to use and one of the most effective forms of birth control available today.

Some women found out about Depo-Provera from family planning clinics when they had a 'birth control failure' scare, like a condom breaking or missing pills. Others heard about it while searching the Internet for alternatives to the pill, and many had it recommended by their doctors as the best birth control option for their current situation. No matter how they found out about it, Depo-Provera was the perfect method for them.

The side effects they were told about and experienced primarily included weight gain and a change in their periods. The prospect of not having periods for months at a time was a great selling point for Depo-Provera. The only real draw back to Depo-Provera was the amount of time it would take to leave the body. As one person stated about it, "…the length of time it will take to leave my body once I stop…but that's something I can easily live with."

The convenience of seeing a doctor only once every three months for an injection makes it an excellent choice for women that know that they don't want to get pregnant in the near future. Helen's family planning nurse suggested Depo-Provera as "…something more long-term to prevent against pregnancy." Helen has been very happy with her choice. What she likes most about it is, "The freedom! It is 99.7% effective and it makes me feel reassured". Grace likes, " …the convenience. Even though I hate shots, I'll brave one once every three months. When I was using the pill I would always forget to take it. I don't have that problem with Depo."

The cost of Depo-Provera is comparable to the pill. Depo-Provera costs on average between $120 and $300 each year (four shots), while the pill costs between $240 and $420 each year (twelve packs). Norplant costs as much as $750 (five years of protection) and that does not include the cost of removing it. Of course, if you visit your local women's health clinic or Planned Parenthood office, the cost of your birth control method will be income based. This makes all methods available at your local clinic affordable for everyone.

As you can see with only two links listed, women that are happy with Depo-Provera don't usually shout it from the rooftops, or start their own web sites.
